Panofsky, Erwin
(30 mar. 1892, Hannover, Alemania–14 mar. 1968, Princeton, N.J., EE.UU.).

Historiador del arte estadounidense de origen alemán. Cuando era profesor de la Universidad de Hamburgo (1926–33), huyó de la Alemania nazi hacia EE.UU. y en 1935 comenzó a dictar cátedra en el Instituto de Estudios Avanzados de Princeton. Se distinguió por sus estudios sobre iconografía, el estudio de símbolos y temas en las obras de arte. Sus escritos destacan por la variedad de temas, penetración crítica, erudición y ricas alusiones a la literatura, la filosofía y la historia. Entre sus obras más importantes se encuentran los novedosos Estudios sobre iconología (1939), Vida y arte de Alberto Durero (1943) y La pintura neerlandesa primitiva (1953).
